Indian Turnip Curry

Turnips are economical, healthful easy to prepare and full of vitamin C and some essential amino acids. One cup of boiled turnips gives only 35 calories while providing 18 mg of vitaminC, 35 mg of calcium and 210 mg of potassium. They are also a useful source of soluable dietary fibers that help soak 'bad' LDL cholesterol. The turnip tops or the greens are even more nutritious than the roots and are an excellent source of beta carotene that the body converts to vitamin A. However they may cause flatulence or gas.
Here's a tasty turnip recipe.
Ingredients:
5 tablespoons Oil
1 pinch Fennel seeds
2 lb Turnip, sliced into 1" strip
2 teaspoon Salt
1/2 teaspoon Turmeric
1 1/4 teaspoon Cumin, ground
1 cup Water
1/4 teaspoon Red chile, crushed
2 1/2 tablespoon Cilantro, chopped
Method :
Heat oil in a large skillet with a tight-fitting lid. Add fennel seeds and turnip strips. Fry, stirring, for 2 to 4 minutes over medium heat. Add salt, turmeric and cumin and mix well. Cover and cook gently over low heat for 10 minutes, the turnip should be soft. Uncover and drain off any excess oil. Add water, stirring and cook over medium heat for 3 minutes. Remove from heat and sprinkle in the crushed chiles and cilantro. Serve with rice and bread.
